While I'm sure its a wonderful place, turning off the WiFi on Fri-Sat-Sun will keep me from ever trying it.

First of all, the food was great. I was completely happy with my meal and drinks. However, the server was about as rude as is gets. I’ve only heard great things about Julius Meinl and was looking forward to checking it out. Our waiter was so rude that I will never return. This happened on Sunday the 24th around 4pm. It was not overly busy so there was no need for the complete lack of respect. I’ve since shared my experience with others. It seems to be a common thing. I would also like to point out that other employees were working hard and it was more or less our particular server. We still tipped generously in hopes that he will not carry his negative attitude to the next table.

I had heard tales of Julius Meinl out in the suburbs and finally got around to confronting this mythical coffeehouse last Sunday. We got in just before 11, which seems to be the time to go if you’re ready to sit down and eat. Meinl’s menu is successfully simple and thorough in both its food and drink pursuits. It’s as if they knew exactly what you needed.
From the diverse tea and coffee menu, I chose the Austrian standard melange, a mix of milk and espresso with a dusting of cocoa powder on top. I was expecting a bit more punch from the espresso, but was so enchanted by the bite-size chocolate accompaniment and silver platter on which it was presented that I didn’t really mind.
If you’re in the mood for breakfast, Meinl offers a great selection of not-so-common egg variations. There is the traditional Austrian breakfast, which includes two soft-boiled eggs, bread and preserves, as well as the baked eggs, available in a variety of combinations of vegetables, cheeses, meats and herbs. I ordered mine with Black Forest ham and Swiss cheese. My steaming breakfast arrived pleasantly contained in an oval white porcelain dish. Not just pleasing to the eye, this egg, ham and Swiss team came together in perfect savory breakfast union.
Overall, Julius Meinl’s left me feeling satisfied and content, not only because of their delicious food (and I didn’t even try the pastries) but because of the establishment’s solid character; they know what they’re doing and do it well.

The chocolate cakes we tried both dark and white were very good paired with their delicious espressos. Wonderful place and on Friday night they had live music to add to the mood.

I moved to the States from Austria 20 years ago, and went to the coffee shop in Chicago last summer. The coffee and pastries were excellent and very authentic. I would recomend it to anybody.

I absolutely love this place. Here's why:
1) Great coffee. Either straight up, or in some interesting concotions (try the melange or eiskaffe for something different)
2) OUT OF THIS WORLD pastries. JM has the BEST croissants this side of Paris and there are usually more than a dozen beautiful individual items in their display cases.
3) Reasonable prices. Especially if you binge on coffee and croissants :-)
4) Distinct feel. This is definately a European establishment and it just feels different from the usual coffee-bar & muffin joint.
So check it out. It can be crowded on the weekends, especially during the summer. If you want to chill, I suggest midafternoon on a weekend or the mornings on a weekday.
I have yet to try their high tea, but I bet it's tasty.

My friend surprised me with this new cafe last night, and neither of us were disappointed. Rather than one of the many independent-but-similar places we've been, Julius Meinl provided a distinctly European atmosphere while still maintaining a high comfort level. Our server was extremely nice, our seats were plushy and intimate (without crossing that border into obtrusiveness), and the coffee was attractive in its presentation. If Julius Meinl were open later, the only missing piece would be in place; as it is, we will definitely be frequenting this place for the dark roasts and extravagent desserts whenever our hours allow.

I've read reviews about Julius Meinl a couple of different places, so when I moved to Southport I wanted to give it a try. On the surface, is a great looking place - big eating area, good looking deserts - but I found it to be all flash and no substance. My coffee was laid out beautifully, but my server was really snotty. My salad was good, but way too small for the price. Instead of being a place I could go and relax I found it "too cool for school." Too bad.

Have been here twice and going back again on 6/4. Great salad with the blue cheese phyllo triangles! Excellent pasteries and the service was wonderful. Everyone should try it!
