Barleycorn on Clark used to be the best bar to dance at in the neighborhood. Now, the music is terrible and the lighting upstairs is worse.
The line to get in is not so bad, but the line to get upstairs takes 45min - an hour.
It used to be that when one person came down, the staff let one person go up. Now, the person that works at the bottom of the stairs, lets up select groups of people and lets other people stand in line waiting.
I waited with 4 girlfriends while 3 overweight, ugly guys were allowed upstairs. Apparently, they new the equally overweight, ugly guy working the staircase.
I'm done with this place.

Don't go here unless you want your girlfriend to be MOLESTED by the employees. We were upstairs at the club and one of the cleaning guys walked behind my girlfriend and literally grabbed her crotch as he walked by. He turned around to see if she saw him, and unfortunately for him, she did. She told me, we told the bouncers and they said they would "take care of it." I watched them for the next hour and all they "took care of" was standing around talking to each other. Disguisting.

John Barleycorn is a cross between a bad frat party (many unattractive trashy guys) and a wannabe night club (many bouncers with earpieces and tight shirts who treat the customers like they are animals). One of the bouncers between the first and the second floor was completely rude and yelled (not in the music-is-too-loud sense, but rather in the you-are-a-liability sense) at me to get in line, unnecessarily. He then took a very harsh and unprofessional tone with me when I apologized for not knowing there was a line. I am a 5'5", 120-lb female, so I felt threatened being yelled at by a 200-lb bouncer. When I spoke to a "manager" about the bouncer incident, he patted my shoulder, and offered me a shot in a very patronizing and dismissive tone. He never actually addressed the problem. The bartender downstairs was slow and also unfriendly. The music was the only saving grace, though the entire dance floor was simply a meat market. The ratio of men to women was perhaps 70% to 30%, which meant that every female had at least two unattractive guys drooling over her. And finally, when the evening was over more of the staff yelled at us to "get out" (there is a great difference between being assertive/ authoritative and being rude). I will never visit this establishment again and will be sure to prevent anyone I know from going to this place in the future. I actually can't remember the last time I was treated so poorly and am totally appalled.

Are you one of the dregs of humanity? Chad, Trixie, Asshole, Yuppie or just drunken bar slut you're all welcome at John Barleycorn. We all wait with bated breath to hear you scream over the music about trevails of working in a Law Firm as a page or Advertsining firm as a.. page. And, What shall you wear tonight fair wriglyville trash, This is a classy place, pants down to your asscrack or a 6 collared shirt popped twice from sunday are all calssy enough but NO HATS, even though the man on their sign has a top hat, an irony lost on everyone at the 'corn'. So comon down to John Barleycorn the bar with old timey charm and 50 inch plasma tvs on every wall where there are more black guys on the constant loop of puffy videos than there are in the bar. Three cheers brah!

This place is fun after a cubs game or during the week nights, but come Friday night. Ya its packed, slutty girls wasted guys. Its huge, 2 floors, but it took a while to get beers, and everyone was wasted dancing. There is huge line inside to get upstairs to the dance floor after like 11. I say if your up for all that you'll have a great time. If you have a big group of people you'll have fun.But if your looking for a classier bar with classier girls and guys...Dont go here. It's all college kids.

I took my wife to Barleycorn last night for her 21st birthday and we met up with about 10 other friends there. At first everything was ok with some food and drinks... But as happens often on 21st birthdays, she got a little too drunk and had to go to the bathroom to vomit. When she didn't return after a couple minutes, I went to the bathroom door. A large woman was yelling over the DJs music and waving for somebody to come. Next thing I knew, they were escorting her out! Two huge security guards, who would not even let her get her stuff or her husband!! They were PUSHING her down the stairs and towards the door. And for what?? For being drunk??? She certainly was NOT hurting anybody, and was obviously very sick. But instead of helping her, they treated her like a criminal to avoid liability.
PROS: Decent food, drinks.
CONS: Horrible treatment of patrons, expensive (8-10 dollars for Margheritas), terrible music on the dance floor...

John Barleycorn's is a GREAT little bar. We go all the time and it is perfect. It's chill when you want it to be chill - just go down stairs. It's crazy when you need it to be crazy - just go upstairs. The people there are great and always fun. The drinks are strong. No cover. Not really a line. And lots of great places right around the corner. John Barleycorn's a great bar to meet up at, have a few, and then roll out for after hours after last call. Great place, love it, been going there for years. It's a staple. definitely.

Place is ok, nothing special. They do not "water down" their alcohol, which is a huge plus! You get pure Vodka and whatever else you order. They say they close at 2:00, but they turn off the music and start kicking people out at 1:30 which is very lame. And you get the usual 75% guys and 25% girl ratio.

Well, I never got inside. I was using my friend's cell phone in line, and told him to go ahead in. I finished the call and got in line, but the bouncers were JERKS and wouldn't let me in because my lip is pierced. Not only that, but they wouldn't let me go tell my friend that I couldn't get in, they wouldn't go get him, and they wouldn't even give him his phone so that I could leave. It was freezing cold outside and I was wearing a dress, and ended up standing outside for 20 minutes. I will never go back. It's a sports bar for goodness sakes--what is the big deal with a piercing?
