RE: directions to this club.....Redline to Harrison stop, not Grand. They moved from Grand to Plymouth Court last year, in the south Loop. It's tricky to find the place if you're not familiar with the street, they're on the side entrance of Dearborn Station, big sign, but not well-lit. The good news is the new room itself is much nicer than the last location.

RE: Music..... only the best acts in and out of town so its always great here, every time. Also, I saw Erin McDougall on the 10th and understand she'll be there again on the 25th. Her band's exceptional.........she's really good with heavy rhythmic numbers. I'd recommend her to anyone who hasn't heard her yet.......quality stuff!

Went to the showcase on 02-10-09 with a small group of friends to see Erin McDougald sing. This is my new favorite spot to see her sing in. Terrific sound, cozy room, friendly bartender and with all the room's focus on the stage, she sparkles more than ever. Her singing is out of this world!

The directions say "Red line to Grand". NO! Maybe Red line to Harrison. This is in Printer's Row, south of the Loop.

I've been going to the wonderful Jazz Showcase for two decades and my favorite singer I ever heard there was Erin McDougald. (I've been going to clubs to hear Erin McDougald for close to six years now).

Here's why: She has an absolutely beautiful-sounding voice and uses it like a horn player. A gifted improvisor. Erin surrounds herself with top-shelf players, their renditions of standards and requests always impress me so much because she infuses such originality. Let me add that Erin McDougald also knows the value of being 'engaging' without being bawdy or cliche (that goes for her musicality AND her stage presence). In other words, she lets the music take the focus not her body language. A rare virtue among singers.

To some people's chagrin, owner Joe Segal makes note of his general disliking of "singers" on his stage. But he knows great jazz when he hears it, Erin delivers just that every time, raising the bar for other singers and instrumentalists. I saw her again at The Jazz Showcase a few weeks ago and her performance spun me into a world of bliss! It was spell-binding.

If there was a recording of that show, I WANT IT. I've seen her at the old showcase but I actually prefer the new venue: Great sound and the stage has a better lay-out for the audience's viewing pleasure. The bar is bigger at the new location and more comfortable too. What a classy room!

If you haven't had the opportunity to check out the Jazz Showcase at its new Plymouth Court location, you are missing out on one of the greatest Jazz Experience in Chicago.

The new location offers many perks that were missing at the 59 West Grand location. First, you are no longer encumbered by the posts that once blocked your view of the stage at the last home of the Showcase. Second, the Showcase is no longer 21 and over, which offers an awesome opportunity for the young Jazz Cats out there who want to catch a set of good, authentic Jazz. Third, if you come to a gig after 7pm, the parking is considerably cheaper than the old location and it is only blocks from both the blue line and the red line.

Though the format has changed slightly, the Jazz still remains top of the line. Whether you are there to see a local artist or one of the national acts, you will not be disappointed.

Lest you worry that the atmosphere has changed since the reopening, rest assured that Joe is his same cranky self whilst working the front door and Chuck and Wayne will still meet you with a smile.

Saw the Erin McDougald CD release show on 2-27-06. Terrific venue, and the show exceeded my expectations. Erin was lovely, and her voice is an instrument that exceeds the really fine players in the band. Go see Erin every chance you get.

The Jazz Showcase is the real deal for cool jazz. Over the years I've been to both the Blackstone and the River North Clubs and the talent is ALWAYS first rate. I've seen "Lockjaw" Davis, Bird-sideman Red Rodney, Buddy Rich, Stanley Turrentine, and Tal Farlow there - all great artists and great shows. The great Blue Note in NYC is only a close second. We are fortunate to have Joe Segal hosting jazz fans in Chicago. Bird lives!
