Robert Olen Butler is officially one of my favourite authors now, even though I just finished reading only one of his books - "The Deep Green Sea". I cant believe I never read this sooner. I absolutely LOVED this book. I could not put it down. After reading the first few lines of the book I was already drawn into the world of Tien and Ben. I found it facinating that each chapter was told from the two main protagonists point of view. What I loved about it the most was the incredible attention to detail R. Butler used in the novel. He really captures the essence of the characters thoughts when they are describing their own emotional journeys as well as the environment they were sourrounded in - what they saw, heard, smelled, tasted and touched. It was like you were walking the streets of Vietnam. You could really feel the experiences that Tien and Ben were going through which were both moving and heartbreaking. It literally had me sitting on the edge of my seat. And when I reached the end, I was in complete shock - did not see it coming. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone. It's the epiphany of yet another classical love tragedy. I give it a 10/10
