The earlier poster, Laughing at the Irony, is spot on. Musicians beware.....if you want to waste an evening playing for no money and few people, accept a gig at the Heartland Cafe.

The Heartland Cafe reminds me of the cool old coffee houses I used to hang out in when I lived in the Bay Area. Wholesome food, good music, friendly staff. I have been here many times, love it! If you are looking for a fine dining experience, this is not the place. If you enjoy an outdoor cafe with a great vibe, this is the place

Michael James and Katy Hogan are the epitome of hypocrisy. They put on this air of left wing radicalism and activism but in reality they are of the money ,by the money, and for the money. They thought they could slide on their "alternative" reputation and whine about being "picked on" by the "pigs" when in reality THEY are the "pigs" in this case. The sanitary conditions at the so-called "Heartland Cafe" have always been awful. It was only a matter of time before that much larger bastion of greed and hypocrisy, the City of Chicago (city for sale, inquire Mayors office, fifth floor city hall)caught up with them. I'm willing to speculate that the city looked the other way for a long time until they decided to actually enforce their rules for the purposes of needed revenue due to corrupt mismanagement. I'd rather eat at the Noon Hour Grill. An establishment with a lot more honesty ,better food and cleaner sanitary conditions. I don't think anyone has ever gotten sick on the tofu there. Oh,by the way getting back to honesty or the lack thereof, The "Heartlands " websight says they are closed for "Spring Cleaning" no explanations ,no apologies,no honesty......EAT ELSEWHERE!

The reviewer below is obviously out of touch with reality. He probably has never worked for Mr James a TRAITOR TO THE REVOLUTION.True redical revolutionaries don't exploit the arts, undocumented immigrants or women, something that the capitalist dog Michael James does in great abundance. The fact thatMr James got busted for healthncode violations sends a clear message of apathy for the health of his customers. Obviously keeping his restaurant clean isn't a priority. I know money is however!

The Heartland Cafe is a Chicago landmark, a gathering place, a radio show, a place for breakfast on the outdoor patio in the summer, and a venue for great music in the winter. The service is friendly and the food is wholesome. There are some sour pusses out there, possibly disgruntled competitors, but visit the Heartland for yourself, it is a great place.

Michael James ( the skinflint owner)is a Capitalist Pig in 60s radical clothing. He's got a lotta nerve talking patron of the arts B.S. and stiffing bands! Back in the 90s he booked a band that we were in,we showed up to play and NOBODY KNEW WE WERE COMING! We were supposed to get PAID AND FED We wound up paying for our meal and playing for free! On March 13 2009 the City of Chicago closed the place down for critical health code violations after someone got sick on the tofu. The violations included mouse feces throughout the restaurant! It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy! Karma has been served!James is a disgrace to any honest non-comformist counter-culture hippie!

Went there Friday night with two friends for dinner before a show at the Red Line Tap. Service, from the hostess to the waitress, is friendly but slow, so if you are in a hurry this is not a good choice for dining. Try not to sit next to the bussing/dish section on the porch because the staff flings the dishes in and it gets super loud and annoying. My bison burger was way overcooked and bland. I have a feeling that meat and fish dishes are probably not done very well, so I'll try a veg dish next time. Food a bit overpriced for what you get.

I really like the atmosphere. The menu is interesting and diverse. Some of the dishes are pretty bland. The staff seem quite reluctant to interact with the clientele.

As a vegetarian, I want to love Heartland, but every time I eat here I feel ripped off.

To Heartland's credit, their veggie/vegan offerings are immense, but food is rarely well-seasoned and pales in comparison to vegetarian powerhouses like Blind Faith and Alice & Friends.

This time I ordered the Veggie Chili/Avocado Omelette, which was huge and delightfully fluffy. Regrettably, I only got 2 slices of avocado, and the chili was somewhat watery and bland.

I was also disappointed that they were out of biscuits and gravy...the cornbread that I got in its place was dry, mealy, and plain.

Service was wonderful, and the decor is warm and funky...but seating on the outdoor patio is abyssmal, with painful plastic chairs and tables crowded too close together.

I have lived in Rogers Park for 3 years and I love this place. I actually chose to live on Lunt Ave. after eating and hanging out at the Heartland while apt. searching in the neighborhood just to be close to this wonderful cafe. The food is decent, the staff is enduring and I love the Buffalo Bar to sit and drink beer w/ friends. While the crowd & staff are peace & justice conscious, as am I, they are not holier than thou at all, and all types of people congregate and a welcome there. Best place for brunch! Super fun to sit outside on nice days. Great coffee.
