Buckingham fountain is in Grant park, a real tourist attraction and fun spot to visit. Lots of summer events. A rose garden on the south end (memorable from when I was a child, looks like they may have brought it back).
Gospel Fest -- free Blues Fest -- free Taste of Chicago -- buy tickets for food at up to 100 venues, less gourmet than it used to be, too much meat, best bet is Connies Pizza, frozen cheese case, lo-carb beer, friendly crowd and some good music and magic acts, one amusement ride, fireworks on July 3rd. Jazz fest -- free Gaelic fest -- fabulous fun, set dancing and ceili, lots of good music and some big bandshell acts. Symphony -- all summer ($10 for good seating) Dance classes -- summer Movies -- summer Ice skating -- winter, unless they moved it to Millenium Park (new) Field house (serves as warming shelter for skaters)
Goes on for many blocks, with lakeshore in view (across Lake Shore Drive) and accessible at a few stoplights.
