I admit I was a little confused when my friend suggested the 44th Ward Dinner Party for a Monday night get together. “What are you inviting me to?” I asked while googling the 44th Ward and thinking, I didn’t know she was involved in politics. Once that confusion was dispelled and I steeled myself for going to a Halsted bar, I was pleasantly surprised. The bar/restaurant is warm and inviting. The decor looks like an old social club, and it’s easy to imagine it as a smoked-filled room. After ordering drinks, my friend explains that they serve variations of the grilled cheese. Internal eye-roll. But looking at the list of make-your own ingredients was another pleasant surprise. Besides the variety (which almost causes indecision paralysis), there were several vegan options. I settled on a pretzel roll with cheddar, herb spread and tomatoes. I also suggest the bacon vinaigrette for the side salad. Other items of note: the music covered a wide range of new, old and obscure, and was loud enough to drown-out the other tables. There is a DJ on the weekends. Also, there is a photo booth tucked in the back room.
