I have had tea at the Peninsula and enjoyed it very, very much. I had heard that the Drake's tea was voted best in the city, and was excited about trying it. If it is even better than the Peninsula, it must be quite something.
What a disappointment! We traveled a long way for 4 tiny, dried out, everyday sandwiches, plus one small scone and one piece of bread each (also dried out). We were never offered any more sandwiches, and our request for water was not well received. The desert plate was 4 tiny pastries tossed on a dinner plate. They were the size of quarters, and we had to cut them in half so the two of us could taste each one. I really didn't believe that was all there was going to be, but no one ever came back. Not even to clear our dishes. All of this for $29.95!
The Peninsula brought us 3 tiers full of lovely sandwiches and scones and breads, and when we finished them we were asked if we would like some more. Dessert was also a 3 tiered affair full of goodies. And then at the end, they brought us individual chocolate souffles hot from the oven. The staff were a delightful bunch, and were eager to please.
