Chamber punk and cabaret funk. Eerie theatrical and compelling, apartment combines the spirit of 20's berlin cabaret with forays into experimental pop-punk and avant garde.
Apartment started in early 1999 with Caila (vocals) and Christine (keyboards) making electronic part live, part sequenced music and creating some of apartment’s first songs. Caila's theatrical flair and intelligent/absurdist poet vocals make apartment a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. Christine's love of all types of music, quick changes and orchestralesque arranging skills are the perfect backdrop to Caila's antics. The object was to eventually grow into a band when musicians where found.
Ariella (guitarist) a friend and schoolmate of Caila and Christine was added. She brings an unorthodox approach to harmony and thoughtful chops, adding an element of loveable quirkyness. Natalie (cello), adds further to the chamber arrangements bringing in classical cello lines and avant garde sounds. All four early members attended Shimer College, a small "great books" college in Waukegan Illinois. These four formed the core of the group adding some songs and playing a few gigs, which resulted in very positive responses and other gig offers. Open to non-traditional pop instrumentation apartment invited Joe Exley (tuba) to sit in. Joe eventually left for New York replaced by talented upright/electric bassist James Wallace. James brings a rock drive with jazz-hop coolness, along with incredible versatility to the apartment mix. Barry Bennett, a force in Chicago's improvised music scene added his talents and organic hypnotic drumming to apartment.
