Wayland Rogers, a lyric baritone, conductor, composer and teacher trained at University of Kentucky, Wichita State University, Northwestern University, The Salzburg Mozarteum, and in London.
As a singer he has sung with Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Cleveland Symphony, Music of the Baroque, Grant Park Music Festival , Tanglewood Festival, Blossom Festival, Ravinia Festival and Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center. He received a 1986 Grammy nomination for Best Chamber Music recording with the Chicago Symphony Winds.
He trained as a conductor with Margaret Hillis. He was Artistic Director/Conductor of the Camerata Singers of Lake Forest for 15 years, Director of Choruses at Loyola University for 10 years, and is presently Director of the Chamber Singers of North Park University and Music Director of Music at North Shore Unitarian Church, Deerfield. There he is producer of the Young Vocal Artists Concerts, a series of monthly recitals of Chicago's finest young professional singers.
His choral compositions, published by Boosey and Hawkes, Alliance Music Publications, Thomas House, Graphite Publishers and Jackman Music Pub. are regularly performed world-wide. He is the winner of several composition awards: the Roger Wagner Center Choral Competition, the Meistersinger's Choral Competition (Los Angeles), the Chautauqua Chamber Singers Competition, the Illinois ACDA Choral Competition and the Vincent B. Silliman Anthem Award, and The Leeds Philosophical & Literary Society Choral Composition Prize. Several of the Chicago area's foremost choral ensembles regularly program his works, including: Chicago a cappella, Bella Voce, Chicago Mastersingers, William Ferris Chorale, New Classic Singers, Chicago Choral Artists and Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus. His art songs have enjoyed success among many outstanding opera singers including: Susanna Phillips, Katherine Calcamuggio, Erika Buckholz, David Portillo, Michelle Areyzaga and Maria Logios.
He has taught at Northwestern University, DePaul University School of Music, DePaul Theater School, Music Institute of Chicago, Western Kentucky University and Loyola University. He presently teaches at North Park University and is Director of Music at North Shore Unitarian Church, Deerfield.
