Verbal Kent was first inspired to write rhymes as a budding youth during the early nineties. For years he tried to perfect his craft, using hip-hop's “golden era” as a source of inspiration, and finally in 1998 he linked up with the Organic Mind Unit to quench his need to create quality hip-hop music. Together they released two albums, The Organic Mind Unit (1999) and The Unusual Suspects (2001), which sent them on a tireless tour schedule performing 180 shows in three years.
In 2003 the crew disbanded, and Kent was left to establish himself as a solo artist. He was inked to a deal with Gravel Records and he released a solo album titled What Box? (2004), which was well-received by critics. The celebration behind his solo success was short-lived as he was attacked, and nearly killed, in an attempt at his life in an alley near his home. Hurt, but not deterred, Kent dove head first into his music using it as a form of therapy. The experience ultimately provided him with enough content for his second album with Gravel Records, Move With the Walls (2006).
Kent followed up this effort in 2007 with a collaborative album from his crew Giraffe Nuts (Rusty Chains, Alltruisms, Lance Ambu, Elfamail, Roadblok and Doomsday). The album immediately captured the attention of the legendary Molemen, who agreed to release his third album, Fist Shaking (2008). With a slew of albums in such a short span, Kent has gained the respect of some of hip-hop’s most esteemed artists—and has shared the stage with GZA, Sadat X, Redman, De La Soul, KRS-ONE and many others.
