Vanguard Aces

Formerly The Big Swing, this group still plays regularly around the city.

Ten-piece jazz band (with a five-piece horn section) plays regularly at Frankie's Blue Room (Wednesdays) -- Frankie's owner Riff Menza is the bands' manager -- and the Green Mill (Tuesdays) as well as Thursdays at Liquid, filling Chitown's burgeoning need for more suit-wearing jump blues/jazzmen. Says WCBR's Hambone's Blues Hour, "From the first note to last call, the Big Swing's relentless energy keeps everyone jitterbugging all over the dance floor."

Members include pianist Donny Nicholo (previously of the Mighty Blue Kings), Sam Burckhardt, and trombonist Daniel Sniderman. Frontman Eric "Shoutin'" Sheridan fronted a jump blues band in Washington D.C. for 14 years, before moving to Chicago.

Here's their news release:

The band will continue to play regularly scheduled shows at The Green Mill, and Liquid nightclubs. The band is now seeking new management. The group is committed to continuing their reputation for hard-driving jump blues and swing music. Recently noted by Lloyd Sachs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, for "their instrumental prowess," and by Tom Lawler, of Swing Time Magazine, as "Chicago's most popular swing band," the band will be devoted to musical integrity, and the desire for authenticity to roots music. "The Big Swing have basically become the elders of the Chicago Swing scene due to their deep musical background," said Lawler in his article. Jason Koransky, associate editor of Downbeat Magazine, says the band "puts out enough spark to solve the summer energy crisis." The band has also been featured in Playboy Magazine and The Chicago Tribune. -more- BIG SWING REFORMED--PAGE TWO The new unit is being formed by its members' deep commitment to keep the band together with the same blockbuster lineup.
