| There are two sides to the hip-hop world: the underground and the mainstream. What makes Chicago hip-hop so unique, though, is how accessible our underground artists are, which in turn makes them local celebrities. We can easily celebrate the creative genius that makes Chicago music so great right alongside the artists that directly contribute to the flourishing scene. Over the past decade, however, hip-hop has lost its identity due to the media's over-glamorization of the art form, and many fans are left muttering about the way things used to be. Never fear, though, hip-hop responded with a group appropriately named the Superheroes of Sound; disgruntled fans can consider themselves saved.
The Superheroes of Sound have a fresh and crisp vibe that's influenced by the likes of Pete Rock, 9th Wonder and Little Brother. This collective of MCs, DJs, and promoters uses those influences to work toward reviving the classic era while saving hip-hop as a whole (the reasoning behind the superhero name). The true test, however, is how well a new group gels on stage, and the S.O.S. have responded with lyrical engaging songs and head bobbing beats. They've collaborated with Agents of Change, Phillip Morris, Eulorhythmics, Lyric District and many more. The unsigned group has been around since 2006, and with a handful of shows coming soon, expect their sound to polish up for a possible studio release. Overall the S.O.S. aren't afraid to try a new sound, and with intelligent lyrics coupled with groove-heavy beats, these cats will add a refreshing flavor to Chicago hip-hop. (Jeff Min)
