| Born in Chicago on April 30, 1924, Harnick graduated from NU's School of Music in 1949, where he contributed lyrics and music to several Waa-Mu productions. From 1952, he contributed to Broadway and off-Broadway productions. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for the lyrics to Fiorello, the musical about New York City mayor LaGuardia. Harnick was also lyricist for Fiddler on the Roof, which won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Compposer and Lyricist.
Harnick was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1993.
