Orbert Davis

Chicago mainstream jazz trumpet star Orbert Davis has won several national competitions... Says Chicago Reader/Playboy jazz critic Neil Tesser, "In terms of unbridled trumpet power, Orbert Davis brooks little competition in Chicago." Davis sometimes hops the genre boundary between jazz and classical music -- as with his new Concerto for Jazz Quartet and Orchestra (premiered in 11/98 by the Chicago Sinfonietta) and his tribute to another genre-bending Davis, Sketches of Miles. He studied at Northwestern, whose music department is better known for turning out classical musicians than jazzmen, and has been in the pit band of a number of productions, including the Tribune Charities' Nutcracker.

He often leads his own groups, and plays with the Reggie Nicholson Concept. Davis was previously a member of Bill Russo's Chicago Jazz Ensemble. His group With Strings Attached has been well-reviewed. "Davis' trumpet becomes splendiferous -- gleaming gold against the earth tones of violins and cellos." says the Chicago Reader's Neil Tesser.

The Chicago Tribune's Howard Reich says "As arranger, as trumpet soloist and as leader of a diverse collection of instrumentalists, Davis proved that he was up to all roles he chose to play."
