Max Raimi

A native of Detroit, MAX RAIMI studied viola with Ara Zerounian before earning degrees in viola performance first at The University of Michigan and later at The Juilliard School, where he was a student of Lillian Fuchs. In 1984, Raimi joined the viola section of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and is frequently heard in chamber performances in Chicago, live on the radio, and at music festivals throughout the United States. Mr. Raimi is also a prolific and successful composer and arranger. His music has been performed at such venues as the Library of Congress, Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, the Paris Opera, and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. He has received commissions from the Chicago Symphony, The Library of Congress, the American Chamber Players, the Mohawk Trails Concerts, the Elmhurst. Symphony Orchestra, and the Ciompi Quartet of Duke University.

In February of 1998, Raimi's Elegy for twelve violas, harp, celeste, and percussion was performed at three Chicago Symphony subscription concerts conducted by Daniel Barenboim. In addition, he was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony to compose music for the ECHO Center, an interactive learning enviornment which employs both computer technology and more traditional approaches to introduce musical concepts to new audiences. Current projects include a collaboration with Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and Chicago resident Lisel Mueller and a commissioned trio for the CSO principal flutist Matthieu Dufour, principal oboist Alex Klein, and CSO violist Karen Dirks.

Raimi's arrangements have enjoyed wide circulation, having been performed by Daniel Barenboim on piano, among others. In August, l985, a sellout crowd at the old Comiskey Park heard the Chicago Symphony viola section play his arrangement of The Star Spangled Banner before a Chicago White Sox game, and a “chamber” arrangement of the same work for three violas was twice performed at the old Chicago Stadium for Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
