| Native of Chicago and a member of the AACM, Matana Roberts is a spirited saxophonist and composer who lives in New York City. But her ties to Chicago have remained strong, and in February of 2008, she released The Chicago Project (Central Control), a three-pronged collaboration with some of the city’s free-jazz luminaries. The album’s guests included local legend Fred Anderson (Anderson runs the Velvet Lounge) who joins Roberts for a handful of duets. On The Chicago Project, Roberts flows through free/out pieces, melodic creations and the aforementioned duets, aided by Anderson and guitarist Jeff Parker, bassist Josh Abrams and drummer Frank Rosaly.
Roberts is a powerful and multi-faceted bandleader, and The Chicago Project is just one such effort that proves it. Her Coin Coin project is a stirring, eclectic performance that tells the remarkable tale of Marie Therese "Coin Coin," a renowned Louisianan who went from slave to landowner and, ironically, to slave owner. Roberts also weaves her familial heritage into the Coin Coin project, covering four continents and seven generations of ancestry. In addition to her numerous musical contributions, Roberts also leads her own quartet, has recorded a solo album, collaborates with a number of prominent jazz musicians and was a part of the Sticks & Stones jazz trio with Abrams and drummer Chad Taylor.
