Loud Lucy

A product and victim of the Chicago A&R feeding frenzy that followed the discovery of The Smashing Pumpkins and Liz Phair, this Chicago rock trio put out one album on Geffen (Breathe, produced by Brad Wood) before calling it quits. Says drummer Mark Doyle, "They told us the album would sell itself, and when everything didn't happen the way they said it would, a lot of tension developed. We decided to end it before everyone completely hated each other."

Before Lucy did quit, Breathe sold 50,000 copies. The band toured for a time with Alanis Morissette and Elastica; their live shows were perpetually out-of-tune but charmingly energetic. Since the breakup, bassist Tom Furar has been backing up Liz Phair on her new album. Doyle is reportedly alive and fairing well as Woolworthy's drummer.
