Lin Halliday

Beloved Delmark Records saxophonist passed away on 1/25/2000 of natural causes.

Born in 1936 in DeQueene, Arkansas, Lin Halliday made his first records as a bandleader -- the aptly named Delayed Exposure -- in 1991 when he was 55 years old. But he had been a professional musician since graduating from high school, playing in Los Angeles with Joe Maini, in Wisconsin, and then New York. He replaced Wayne Shorter in the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra, and later performed with the groups of Louie Bellson and Philly Joe Jones, moving through Little Rock, Los Angeles, before settling in Nashvillle.

In 1980, he moved permanently to Chicago, where he became a major figure in the local scene, hosting a regular jam session at the Deja Vu, among other regular gigs. Other recordings include the 1992 East of the Sun and 1994's Where or When. His final record -- with Eric Alexander and pianist Jodie Christian -- is called Stablemates.
