Born in India, Kalyan Pathak taught himself the Dholak (a two sided drum often used in self-accompaniment in devotional songs) as a very young child, and began the study of the tabla at 9. At 13, he was the youngest-ever first prize winner of a state-level music competition for young musicians. During the mid-'80s, he moved to Bombay to study drumset, jazz, and fusion music with Ranjit Barot, one of India's most prominent drummer/composers, for 5 years. During this time, he performed with some of India's best bands (Waterfront, Crosswinds, People, Hammersmith, Bronze Axe, and Mirage) at huge rock shows in India's major cities, where the audiences ranged as high as 50,000 people. Hammersmith won multiple awards (best band, best drummer, and best lead guitarist) at the prestigious Mood Indigo festival/rock band competition, and their single "Hitting it Harder" was on the charts of Asian TV.

During this time, he was a busy commercial recording artist, working with composers including Louis Banks, Pyarelal Sharma, Vanraj Bhatia, Ehsaan Noorani, Zubin Balaporia, Leslie Lewis, Shiv Mathur, Ronnie Desai, Annu Mallik, and Sharang Dev. He worked as a member of Laxmikant Pyarelal Orchestra while scoring music for motion pictures including 'Hum', 'Saudagar', 'Chalbaaz', 'Agnipath', and 'Narsimha', and performed as a musician on hundreds of commercials.

In 1991, Kalyan came to Chicago to pursue a Bachelors degree in Jazz Studies at the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University (he graduated in 1996 with honors). While concentrating on orchestral percussion studies and jazz drumset playing at CMC, he also studied a variety of other styles (African, Afro-Cuban, and Latin) with other teachers around Chicago.

You can hear Kaylan on his CD, The Shape of Ragazz to Come.
