Jimmy Bennington

Jimmy Bennington was born May 22, 1970. He began music studies on clarinet, switching to drums at age fourteen. A largely self-taught musician, Bennington has studied with G.T. Hogan, Malcolm Pinson, Ron Enyard, and Elvin Jones. In fact, during his eight year relationship with the former Coltrane drummer, he was hired as drum tech and band manager (2000-2002; see Modern Drummer Magazine Oct.04/Feb.07), touring the U.S., England, and Switzerland.

As a sideman or as a leader with his group Colour and Sound, he has played and recorded with many artists including legendary clarinetist Perry Robinson, master saxophonist Bert Wilson, Chicago trombonist Julian Priester, Cadence/CIMP recording artists David Haney and bassist Michael Bisio, as well as with NOW Orchestra members Graham Ord and Paul Blaney. Chicago artists Bennington has worked with range from veteran saxophonist Rich Corpolongo to New Music pianist Jim Baker.

Based in Chicago, Bennington performs around the U.S. with successful visits to Canada, Europe, and South America. His 'Midnight Choir' recording, released in 2003, is available on the OA2 Records label. He also has three albums available on CD Baby, including Our Dialogue; Live at the Tugboat, vol. V (2004), Jazz Kaleidoscope(2005) and Portraits and Silhouettes(2006).

Bennington is currently the drum instructor at Flattes and Sharpe Music Co. (on N. Sheridan Rd.), and is also a freelance writer who has written for Modern Drummer Magazine, Chicago Jazz Magazine, Jazz Profile, and Cadence Jazz and Blues Journal.
