| Formed in 1996, Eighth Blackbird is one of the premier new-music chamber ensembles in the world. The Chicago-based sextet engagingly weaves through foreboding, experimental, and minimalist pieces with a mixture of traditional and non-traditional instruments, and its work is often accompanied by performance art. The group performs commissioned works by top-shelf contemporary composers, including Frederic Rzewski, George Perle, David Schober and Steve Reich, as well as a few connected to outside genres, such as drummer Glenn Kotche of Wilco. Eighth Blackbird has performed around the globe, and has been recognized by CBS Sunday Morning, Bloomberg TV, the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times and more. Chicago label Cedille Records has released the group’s four albums, the first of which (Thirteen Ways) was picked as a Top 10 CD of 2003 by Billboard magazine.
