| Chicago-based Chris Gilmartin is a powerful, smart-pop singer/songwriter, charming audiences with his dynamic vocal range, intelligent lyrics and hook-filled refrains. Compared to Matthew Sweet, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Elvis Costello, the former Shimmer frontman has built his loyal follow by writing honest, story-based pop tunes. "I approach my songs with the intention of creating little 'mind movies' for the listener," says Gilmartin. "Each song is a storyline in its own right and people seem to relate to them."
"This is an artist to watch. He has all the makings of an amazing songwriter and performer," says Perry Bax of db sound. Andy Caspen of the Western Courier said "The only thing better than his lyrics is the golden pipes he sings them with." Brad Harvey of OIL Magazine said, "The melodies remind me of the first time I heard War by U2 – powerful and meaningful.: Since going solo last year, Gilmartin has played with such artists as Brian Vander Ark (Verve Pipe), Alice Peacock, Garrison Starr, Trip Shakespeare and others.
Gilmartin considers himself a Midwest native, having moved to Chicago at age 8. He joined his first, and only band Shimmer in 1990, playing with acts such as Toad the Wet Sprocket, Freddy Jones, Lotion and even Flock of Seagulls (“The guy with the hair had had all the notes written on his keyboard,” claims Gilmartin). After 3 albums, the band split and Gilmartin spent a year writing new material. His first (limited) release entitled “Live Highlights” is a collection of acoustic versions of his new songs recorded live in November 2001. A new full length CD is slated for February 2003. Gilmartin constantly promotes to his growing fan base, often posting demos of his latest songs as they are completed to his web site.
