Chic-a-go-go

Public access cable variety show/all-ages dance party is filmed monthly by Jake Austen (known in the musical world as The Goblin's masked frontman, "Phantom Creeper" and the long-running "music-and-trash-culture" 'zine Roctober), his wife Jackie Stewart, and a staff of volunteers, from cameramen to dancers who all get down to pre-recorded music lip-synched by local, national, and international guests, and laugh at kitschy comedy from Austen and his hand-puppet "Ratso."

The idea came from a Roctober story about Kiddie-a-Go-Go (by legendary Boston journalist Phil Milstein), a live dance show produced in Chicago between 1963 and 1970 by an all-kid cast. After getting certified (they worked on the set in "Haitin Baha'i talk Show" Unity in Diversity in 1996) they began digging in seriously on their own show. Many local bands, including the El Dorados, Frontier, the Nerves, the Polkaholics, and Rockin' Johnny, and Andre Williams have performed live on the show.

Chic-a-Go-Go airs on Tuesdays at 8:30 pm and Wednesday at 3:30 pm. on Channel 19 in the city. Shooting occurs at the Chicago Access Network, 322 S. Green. To get on their mailing list, send an email to ratso@roctober.com.
