When the band Fig Dish failed to soar, frontman Blake Smith decided to start fresh and form a new band with his bassist Mike Willison. After a trip to the U.K., it dawned on Blake that electronica was the way to go. Inspired by the Brit pop he'd heard in London, he returned to Chicago and recruiting the last of the members: Jason Batchko on drums, and Dave Suh (Woolworthy) on guitars. In August of 2000, Caviar released their major label self-titled debut on Island Records. While the album is strong and damn catchy, it didn't earn the major sales that a major label would hope for. Caviar then took some time off to "reflect".
Now without a label and on their own, Caviar began playing shows around Chicago and even self-produced a new album, "The Thin Mercury Sound". With all of this new attention, they even got around to signing with a new record label, Aezra/EMI, who will released the new album on July 27.
