| The oldest U.S. all-volunteer civic chorus was founded in 1872 just after the Great Chicago Fire as an all-male chorus. This ensemble has performed at the dedications of the Auditorium Theater in 1889, Orchestra Hall, the Medinah Temple, Navy Pier, the Century of Progress (1933) and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Golden Jubilee (1941), and eventually added women. An annual highlight is their performance of Handel's Messiah at Orchestra Hall.
