NOW CLOSED...Formerly: On our first visit to Schizoclub Gallery, a percussive jam session pounded away. Unamplified beats easily filled the space, about the size of a one-bedroom apartment. Walk to the rear, and prominently displayed inside the bathroom you'll find a real warrant for "arrest of alien." Co-owner Lena Potapova openly admits, yes, she spent a month in jail. Know that creative outcasts, artists, musicians and those who appreciate a frank vibe will find sanctuary at Schizoclub Gallery. It features five artists along with rotating exhibits, such as a recent showing of Daina Almario-Kopp's surreal artwork in gell pens and glow-in-the-dark paint.
The side hookah room hearkens back to opium rooms of yore, closed off by a string of beads, lit with dim colored lights and candles, and covered with 30 opulent pillows for seating. Lose yourself in the music, stare at the artwork, suck on a hookah and wait for your mystical revelation. Tobacco and teas come in a variety of flavors.
Ask to hear either Potapova's dark ambient jazz piano and vocal work, or the techno-polka guitar of co-owner Josef Levitis. Or, participate in ETC 2005, Schizoclub's version of a battle of the bands where winners receive promotional assistance in New York. Both percussive and jazz jam sessions, open to the public, take place 7-10 p.m. Monday (avant-garde jazz jam) and 9-11 p.m. Wednesday (jazz standard). Visit Schizoclub Gallery's Web site for events, concerts and exhibitions.
