Editorial Review of Congress Theater

photo: Courtesy of Nick Flandro
Though the Congress began its life in the '20s as a movie palace, the 2,890-seat auditorium is now home to a wide range of musical acts and other shows, including beloved indie-popsters Belle and Sebastian, oldie-but-goodie Joe Jackson and Mexican singer Alejandra Guzman.

In addition to the excellent variety of music it pulls in, the Congress is an architectural marvel, featuring a design that recalls the Italian Renaissance and Classical Revival styles. Enter the balcony through a dramatic, red-carpeted staircase in the lobby, take in the chandeliers and, once seated, make sure you throw your head back to gaze at the saucer-dome ceiling. It's one of the most beautiful venues in the city—and certainly the most beautiful spot to drink cans of Bud.

Most shows are all ages, but call first to check—sometimes they're 18-and-up. The acoustics leave something to be desired, the seats are a bit uncomfortable, but even so, an evening at the Congress is unforgettable.
