| February 18, 1936- While looking for a new job in 1976, Jean Auel had an idea for a short story about prehistoric life. Preliminary research fueled her fascination and she found herself writing a 450,000-word novel. The long draft gave Auel the material for a series of books. Auel's fans are eagerly awaiting the fifth.
