NOW CLOSED...Formerly: Hip, high-energy and on the cutting-edge of cool, the Crunch at North and Clyborn is the ideal gym for those who want to have a blast while getting fit. While it has all the standards of an elite fitness club (state-of-the-art equipment, full amenities, certified instructors, spotless facilities), it goes an extra step to make sure you are smitten with your sweat session.
While part of the well-known chain, this Cruch's concept varies from the other clubs of the same name. It's as much an adult playground as gym: You can move from floor to floor of the three-level club via elevator, stairs or giant slide. That's right, giant slide. A ping-pong table, Xbox and Mrs. Pac Man machine are just a few ways to have fun with your workout and with other members. A funhouse area sports Astroturf and wavy mirrors to remind you not to take your cellulite dimples to seriously. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all. There's an amusement park photo booth upstairs to capture the memory.
The Classes: Crunches are known for fitness classes, and this club follows suit with a hefty helping of funky and fresh classes that are exclusive to the company. The cardio strip tease is popular; you have to see the water meditation class to believe it; and the Spinning studio has stadium seating and a drop-down screen. Sunrise and sunset yoga classes are held on the sundeck when its warm, as are other cardio classes...nothing beats kickboxing while overlooking the Chicago skyline. Stools and tables on the sundeck and inside are serviced by a hotdog stand, creating a social atmosphere for members to mingle.
The Extras: A pool! Plus floor-to-ceiling windows let light stream in from all sides during the day, a breath-taking view of the Loop and a sundeck for lounging in warm weather. The emphasis on socialization goes beyond ping-pong and hot dogs. The boxing ring is a central focus; once a month a "fight night" draws in members to munch hors d'oeuvres and mingle over a good sparring. Shape up your nightlife with bar nights for members, which take you out of the health club and on to the dance club.
