For those on a budget, the end of the seasonal farmers markets sounds the death knell for good eating, and it's back to the big boxes of Dominick's and Jewel. No more! The Sunflower Market will change the way that you shop, cook and eat.
The Clybourn spot is the second location (the first landed in Indianapolis) of the Minneapolis-based chain, which subscribes to a brilliant concept: value-priced natural and organic foods. Recognizing that cost was the greatest barrier between most consumers and clean, green eating, Sunflower has arrived with its gorgeous, glass walk-in produce cooler, amazing olive bar and healthy selection of beer and wine for every palate and wallet. You see all of this before rounding the bend and feasting your eyes on poultry, meat and shellfish, dairy to die for and packaged organics from Muir Glen, Kashi and many more.
With a roster of local favorites a half-mile long, Sunflower Market is teaming up with area farmers and producers including Bleeding Heart Bakery, Goodness Greenness and Soyworks of Illinois. All of this is well and good, you say, but at the end of the day the proof is in the pocketbook. After my delight at the baked goods, a haul of heirloom tomatoes and my beloved White Wave seitan, I spent a good 25-30 percent less than I would have down the street at Whole Foods.
