Editorial Review of World Music Festival

Date: September 19-25, 2008

Cost: Prices vary

Organizer: Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs

What to expect: Free and ticketed concerts (over 70 of 'em) all around the city featuring traditional and contemporary music from around the world.

Why to go: Some of our top picks include Chicha Libre (several shows, including a free set Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Navy Pier) and Calexico (the close-out concert at Millennium Park on September 25 at 6 p.m.).

Additional info: This year, the closing-night event at the Chicago Cultural Center, entitled "One World Under One Roof," will feature an International Market Center with more than 30 vendors including artisans, food sample tables, craft demonstrations, tourism info and more. The event is free and runs from 6-11 p.m.

Check out the full calendar here.

Participating venues include Millennium Park (Jay Pritzker Pavilion), Chicago Cultural Center, Old Town School of Folk Music, Martyrs, House of Blues Back Porch, Sonotheque, Uncommon Ground, International House of Chicago, Schubas, Museum of Contemporary Art, Empty Bottle, Hideout, Navy Pier, Jazz Showcase and Instituto Cervantes.
