Date: October 8-22, 2009
Cost: $12 for individual shows with various package deals available
What to expect: Two weeks of film spanning the globe from Argentina to the UK, all at the AMC River East 21. Categories include a New Directors competition, Docufest, The Shorter Side of Things (short films), After Dark (genre films), Black Perspectives, Cinema of the Americas, ReelWomen (female writers/directors), OUTrageous (gay-themed films), Animation Nations (animated films) and Illinois[e]makers (in-state films).
Why to go: "Motherhood" (October 8), starring Uma Thurman as a beleaguered Manhattan mom, should be a great kickoff to the event (Uma will be in attendance), and things get considerably more diverse from there. We're particularly pumped for John Woo's Chinese martial arts flick "Red Cliff" and the Russian musical "Hipsters," not to mention these 10 others.
