Date: October 29-November 8, 2009
Cost: $10 per show, $36 for opening-night show and reception
What to expect: Screenings of award-winning Israeli films at the Wilmette Theatre and AMC Loews 600 N. Michigan, including appearances from special guest directors.
Why to go: The fest's centerpiece (screening three times, including opening night) is "Shiva - The Seven Days," which took home the awards for best full-length feature film and best actress at the 2008 Jerusalem International Film Festival. It offers a fascinating portrait of a Moroccan Jewish family as they gather to mourn the sudden death of their brother during the midst of the first Gulf War.
Additional info: The opening-night screening will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 29 at the AMC Loews 600 N. Michigan cinema, to be followed by a kosher reception catered by Garden Fresh Market. Films screen at the AMC through November 1, then screenings shift to the Wilmette Theatre November 2-8. Check the website for the full schedule and to buy tickets.
