Os Mutantes has done more than put Brazilian psych rock on the map, they helped define it. Throughout the late 60s and early 70s Os Mutantes blended a myriad of styles, specifically Tropicália and Samba with American psych rock, and flipped them completely upside down. The backlash was pretty swift and Os Mutantes was criticized for jeopardizing the integrity of local culture, but nevertheless they—along with Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso—continued to create, resulting in some of the most innovative music of the past fifty years. Since reuniting back in 2006, there’s been a renewed interest in Os Mutantes, and to the surprise of many they are as sharp as ever. Their performance at Lincoln Hall will be one of few here in the states, and for only $20 it is an absolute must see. (J. Min)
