It can be argued that Syl Johnson’s recent resurgence was sparked by the local label Numero Group, who released a comprehensive anthology on his 53-year career, a release that received two Grammy nominations. It can also be argued that Syl Johnson is just a natural born performer, and that no matter what course his life took he would always be involved with music in one way or another. Over the past 5 years he’s been performing somewhat regularly, and it’s clear that the wily—at times cantankerous—Syl Johnson still has a lot left in him. His performance at Space will be a perfect opportunity to catch up with the soul legend. (J. Min)
