Long before contemporary soul became a mainstream indulgence, the folks over at Daptone had a firm grip on the genre's direction. The Menahan Street band in particular—whose members play regularly with Sharon Jones, The El Michels Affair, and Lee Fields—have been a standout in the scene, with a brand of instrumental funk that is heady, and soulful, but in no way repetitive and meandering. Their sophomore effort, Crossing, plays out much like their first, but still manages to progress with its complex arrangements. Their set at Double Door will be in celebration of the album, and early arrival is recommended. The Soul Summit DJs will spin dance-friendly soul throughout. (J. Min)
