All it takes is one classic album to seal your legacy in the annals of popular music, and Shadow has done just that. Since then, however, it’s been a whirlwind ride with a series of ups-and-downs, most of which has ended in subpar products. DJ Shadow has been trying to recapture that same magic, and it seems he’s on the verge of making it happen again. He’s a record collector more than anything, so what better way to get back on track than to dig within your own library. The result is the, Total Breakdown: Hidden Transmissions From The MPC Era, 1992-1996, a collection of unreleased material featuring work exclusively done on an Akai MPC. His set at the Mid may delve into that work, but knowing Shadow he’ll be working all angles. Early arrival is recommended. (J. Min)
