Broken Social Scene alum Elizabeth Powell’s baby, Land of Talk, broke in '06 with the aggressive pseudo-feminist EP Applause Cheer Boo Hiss, with Powell leading a trio of Dinosaur Jr. grungy guitars through cut-the-skin tales rooted in shaking her tom-boy youth. With the enlistment of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon as producer, debut LP Some Are Lakes toned down the riot just enough to cut while still revealing Powell's autumnal, lingering prowess mentioned in the same sentences as PJ Harvey and Chan Marshall. Sophomore LP, Cloak and Cipher (August 2010), is a marriage of the old crunch and the new restraint. Montreal prog-rockers, Suuns, lead. (Gavin Paul)
