Ten years ago William Bensussen aka Gaslamp Killer wasn't considered a very popular DJ. In fact many would have called him a dance-floor killer, and it was a surprise, even to him, that club promoters bothered to take a chance on his bugged-out blend of psychedelic rock, hip-hop and grunge. But today, over a decade later, those promoters were proven right as GLK is now known worldwide for the same high-octane performances that began years ago in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter (get the nickname now?). For one of his shows in London (for the Red Bull Music Academy) GLK added to his cult legacy with a live set that featured the best his shows have to offer — from jarring psychedelic breaks to him whipping his token Jewfro around in all directions. His sets aren't meant for the bourgeoisie or the trendy. They're dirty in nature, raunchy in delivery and are meant to intrigue you with every cross of the fader. It's hard to say that you'll get that full experience at a place like Smartbar, which is a bit of head-scratcher as far as venue selections go, but at the very least a live set by Chicago's own Caural and K-Kruz (who just released the "Look Honest" EP featuring Steve Spacek) will give partygoers everything they need to turn this into a memorable night.
