Ninja Tune producer Blockhead performs live beats off of his newest album, the music scene. Local duo The Opus supports, among others.
Keeping in stride with prior releases, Blockhead's newest album, the music scene, is an experimental, sample-based approach to some off-the-wall storytelling. Sure the final product may sound tastefully similar to that of years past, but his process was totally different as he attempted to embrace a multitude of genres — from hip-hop and downtempo to heavy drum and bass. Altogether it's a heady effort that encourages the listener to just sit back and get lost in the peculiar snippets of dialogue and mind-altering melodies. At its core, it's a highly ambitious product even by Ninja Tune standards. For this show he'll be celebrating the album along with openers Quadratic, The Abstract Science DJs and The Opus, a local duo also in the midst of promoting its own shadowy brand of instrumental hip-hop on its newest album, Praying Mantis.
