Must-See Music Pick! From the Music Editors: View Music Picks
If you've been following the soul revival movement coming out of New York, then you've probably heard of the Dap Kings and their label Daptone. Their biggest star right now has been Sharon Jones, but one artist flying under the radar is gospel singer Naomi Shelton. She's not as jovial or as groove-oriented as Sharon, but her raspy voice is just as powerful, as heard on her debut "What Have You Done, My Brother?" The album is full of bluesy melodies and buttery organ licks (provided by Cliff Driver), which together conjure up the feeling of a scorching Sunday church sermon somewhere in the deep south. Naomi and the Gospel Queens know how to harmonize and the powerful content they provide always give the listener a positive tune to hum. (J. Min)
