Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Haaker Flaten is a staple in the international free-jazz scene, emitting blistering bass lines from his four-stringed instrument of choice in The Thing, Scorch Trio and his own quintet. One night before hitting the Hungry Brain, Flaten congregates at the Hideout for a jazzy, experimental rock set with prolific pianist Jim Baker (Exploding Star Orchestra) and pair of regular Rodan collaborators, drummer John Herndon and guitarist Jeff Parker (also two-fifths of Tortoise). Sound artist Jeffrey M. Robinson, known as Wrekmeister Harmonies, also performs in celebration of his birthday and the impending release of his album on Atavistic Records. Later in the night, Herndon and Parker select tunes for the venue’s $5 dance party. (Scott Morrow)
