80’s Babies (Dee Jackson + Tall Black Guy), SPQ-Her, Superheroes of Sound, Insight, Awdazcate, and DJ’s Aquil, Trilogy, Itch13, Dream and Once Again
With artists like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Roots and Erykah Badu setting the standard for neo-soul/hip-hop fusion, I’ve always wondered which Chicago artists would be next in following in their footsteps. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised when acts like Eighties Babies, SPQ-Her, Superheroes of Sound, Insight and Awdazcate heeded the call. But the manner in which they’ve stormed the scene has exceeded all expectations. Sure they draw heavily from the "golden" years, but their unique identities manage to avoid the dreaded "nostalgic rap" tagline. Funky Buddha seems like an odd venue for such a stacked lineup, but with consummate professionals gracing the stage, it should be a smooth ride regardless. (J. Min)
