As if following a cue from Frank Sinatra, celebrities and neighborhood patrons alike flock to Twin Anchors for succulent ribs and a shot of history.
The nautical-themed Old Town landmark has been around since 1932, but according to legend, it was a tavern (or speakeasy) as far back as 1910. From the 1950s up until the '80s, Sinatra was a regular when he was in town. He was known to love the coleslaw. In an homage to perhaps its most endeared guest, the jukebox plays a mix of Ol' Blue Eyes and new music. You might even get the urge to jump up for a jig on the checkered floor. But don't even think about it; as it is clearly posted in the archway, there is "Positively No Dancing!"
A long list of celebrities followed Sinatra to Twin Anchors, but the old-school bar and restaurant has more going for it than a distinguished guest list. The food is better than great, it is an ideal place to bring a group and it is fairly priced, too. Sometimes, the star power can just get in the way; many regulars were denied their fix for five weeks in the summer of 1999, when the restaurant closed for the filming of "Return To Me."
For just less than $20, you can get a slab of Twin Anchors' famous baby-back ribs coated with either zesty barbeque sauce or mild original. Dinners always come with coleslaw and a dill pickle spear and your choice of crispy fries, baked potato, fat onion rings, zesty baked beans or the famed pepper jack creamed spinach. For half that price, diners can devour half of a fried chicken or '60s-style fried fish, back by popular demand after 40 years! A half-pound burger goes for only $8; it surely filled up Chris Farley, who was a regular patron before he died.
