Ta'too is like secondary school for partiers who started their booze education at places like the
Apartment and
McGee's. Rife with high-achieving, stylish ladies and gents who've settled into the city, gotten a promotion and are on the lookout for more than a hook up (like witty banter about American Idol while last year's winner pumps through the speaker), this bar caters to a (slightly) older Lincoln Park crowd.
Those looking for a homophonous translation of the bar's name will be disappointed: The dress code revolves firmly around trendy duds on a clean-cut crowd that would rather have a dance party than get inked. Instead, the name is a nod to the pub's Scottish heritage, and beyond the rich red exterior, patrons will find an extensive whiskey selection keeping in line. Other popular drinks include pricier specialty cocktails, a few wine offerings and a standard selection of beer, including Magner’s and Smithwicks. Massive mirrors stretching along the interior make it easy for quick appearance check-ups—a good thing since the bathrooms only admit one at a time (we did notice two friends cramming in, though).
Barflies familiar with the owner's Southport venture, Hye Bar, can expect similar touches like chandeliers, a lounge-y mid-20s crowd and several flat-screen TVs. Tat'too does not serve food, but if patrons feel the need to relive late-night-binge glory years, they can head down the Taco and Burrito House just west on Fullerton.
