Editorial Review of Tantrum

With $5 Absolut martinis on Mondays and $3 glasses of wine on Wednesdays, you'll have nothing to throw a tantrum about here. Located in the South Loop, Tantrum delivers a sleek after-work spot (the Financial District is a ten-minute walk away). It's also the neighborhood bar for Neiman Marcus salespeople and freelance catalogue-stylists.

Totally off the radar of thrifty and rambunctious University Center kids, the martini lounge manages to keep a cool and clean look. Couches line exposed-brick walls opposite a bar that lines the length of the room. Artwork, saturated with aqua greens, maroons and marigold oranges, accompanies random photos of skaters in a skate-park (come for Sketch Night Mondays and display your own work). Cone-shaped lamps hung from amber walls light the room. Explosive paint strokes distract your visit to the washroom area (make sure you pay attention to which one is the men's and which is women's, because it can get confusing).

Visit when Ashley Woodward works the bar and let her shuffle of iPod selections-Nas, Mos Def, The Sounds-add to the underground/hip atmosphere. Dates cuddle up on couches, sipping dessert martinis like the Hazelnut (Frangelico, Absolut, hazelnut and cream), while a racially and sexually diverse crowd shares photos, compliments and designer-talk.

Choose from over 30 martinis; recommended are the Chocolate Banana (Absolut, Godiva and banana cream) and the Starburst (Absolut Mandarin, grenadine and orange juice). Cocktails range from $6-$8 and the average beer is $4. Specials abound daily and Pabst Blue Ribbon is $2 every day.
