Editorial Review of Sofo

While some bar names are a mystery, there's no doubt that Sofo is named for its south-of-Foster-Avenue location. It's an area of the city that's rapidly developing a new identity, known by some as Southern Andersonville and by others as Uptown. Colm Treacy, one of the owners of both Sofo and T's Restaurant and Bar, wanted to continue changing the face of this strip of Clark Street and opened Sofo when gay bar Different Strokes closed. "I think Andersonville is a really nice, friendly neighborhood and more nice, friendly bars would do well here."

Inside, the space is friendly indeed. With crimson walls and high ceilings, the bar has an airy feel, decorated with artwork by local artists. There's a mainly gay clientele of men in their thirties and forties, though like T's, the bar has more of a neighborhood feel than the splashy gay bars in Boystown. A smattering of television sets play music videos, with an occasional sing-a-long erupting at the bar, and there are stacks of gay magazines and newspapers for those drinking solo.

A large beer garden in the back attracts a big crowd in warm weather, and the bar is decidedly dog-friendly, with neighborhood pooches occasionally making an appearance during the early hours. Though there's no food on the menu, you're encouraged to walk the one block north to T's and bring food back. If you ask nicely, someone might even watch your barstool while you're gone.
