Sometimes it isn't all about location, location, location - although one has to wonder what's going on for a sports bar near Wrigley Field to fail or switch management. Such is the case with the former Grand Central, which has been rechristened as Rockwood Place under the management of the same team behind
English and
LaSalle Power Co.
Looks like Rockwood Place has hit the ground running with the "something for everyone" business plan that so many other bars in Wrigleyville implement with varying degrees of success. "Combining the comforts of a lounge and the entertainment of a sports bar," (according to its web site) Rockwood Place's twist on the formula is to position itself as an upscale beer and shot bar.
If that's the plan, the whiskey list leaves a lot to be desired. The entire selection can be found in countless other bars throughout the city. Rockwood Place won't have whiskey lovers spurning Delilah's, Twisted Spoke or Risque Cafe anytime soon, but it should be enough for the post-Wrigley crowd. The beer list, while uninspired, is satisfactory.
The food menu shows promise, but doesn't go too far out on a limb for Cubs fans just looking for the next shot. Flatbreads here are the stars, but rely too much on toppings.
