Editorial Review of Irish Eyes

This haunt is hard to miss, with a giant Guinness draught and its signature toucan adorning the brick wall and announcing Irish Eyes for what it is: an Irish pub. With its proximity to the Apollo Theater, the bar gets its share of pre- or post-show drinkers, but snooty types should probably look elsewhere. This neighborhood bar keeps things decidedly low-frill, with basic bar stools, a jukebox, lots of TVs, a Golden Tee machine, a regulation dart board and ice cold beers. The exposed brick walls are plastered with beer distributors' posters from over the years.

The crowd, which ranges from early 20s to early 80s, seems full of people who just need a little time away from the outside world, and everyone's welcome to join in the inexpensive tippling. Well, except on the weekend, when DePaul students come in packs and make the atmosphere daunting for anyone over the drink-'til-you-puke age. By 1 a.m. on a Saturday, it'll be near-impossible to find a seat (other nights the place can be a ghost town).

Don't expect there to be any food (though they will order pizza if you're desperate). Do expect a bar stocked full of liquor, Guinness on tap and $10 pitchers. The bartenders are friendly and often times a "guest bartender" will be featured for the night. Folk singer Whitey O'Day can often be found playing a tune on the elevated corner stage. Live Irish music is played on some weekend nights, but call ahead to make sure.
